Old Pine Dresser with Folk Art Detail

Some pieces of furniture arrive at the Madhouse and simply tell you what they need.

This beautiful old pine dresser was rescued from auction and, unusually for me, I haven’t painted it.

I’ve given it a thorough clean and treated it for woodworm, but otherwise I’ve left it just as I found it. The old pine has a wonderful, naturally aged finish, with all the knocks, marks and imperfections that come with a piece of furniture that has lived a life before arriving here.

And then there’s that fabulous painted detail.

The left-hand side has an old folk-art style floral decoration, with faded earthy reds, greens, yellows and blues. It’s wonderfully worn and imperfect and gives the dresser a real sense of personality. I have no idea who painted it or how long ago, but I love the fact that it’s there — a little piece of its history that I didn’t want to paint over.

The dresser itself is a lovely, manageable size, with useful storage in the lower cupboard and drawer, topped by the characterful upper hutch. It would work beautifully in a kitchen, dining room, hallway or anywhere that needs a little old-world character.

There is a previously cut opening in the back, presumably made for electrical sockets or wiring. I’ve left this as found and have reflected it in the description and price.

This is not pristine furniture — and that’s precisely the point. It’s old, honest, wonderfully quirky and completely individual.

Sometimes the best thing you can do to an old piece of furniture is absolutely nothing.

Please remember this is an old piece of furniture and it has all the bumps, marks, wear and imperfections you’d expect from something with a history. That’s exactly what I love about it.

Condition:

As with all vintage items, this piece may show minor signs of age that add to its charm and authenticity. Each item is uniquely restored, ensuring no two pieces are ever the same — a truly one-of-a-kind find.
